Soundwell for carers

Soundwell music therapy runs a music support group for carers once a month in central Bath. This long standing group offers a unique opportunity to explore sounds and instruments together, whilst providing respite, peer support and support for wellbeing for unpaid caregivers.

How can it help?

Feedback from group members has highlighted 3 main ways that the music support group for caregivers can help:

Respite.
Soundwell is a real oasis of me-time, which I really value and appreciate.”
“Music is an escape, you feel you are in a different world. I really look forward to the group every month, my life would become emptier without it.”

The group offers a space for you away from your caring responsibilities. It’s a chance to try something new, be playful and nurture your creativity, perhaps exploring a new side to yourself. It’s a chance to take a break whilst doing something nourishing for yourself.

Peer Support.
“Everyone is very supportive. You do go away feeling that you are not the only one having a difficult time – and sharing your own problems seems to make the burden lighter.”
“There is a sense of community and shared purpose which is quite unique.”

An important part of the group is connecting with other carers, sharing your experiences with people who understand, and receiving support from group members as well as  facilitators. There’s a real sense of community in the group, and it can reduce feelings of isolation.

Wellbeing
“I wish I could adequately explain how good it is to come to the Soundwell music therapy support group for carers. It helps release emotions, still my mind and give peace in me in the way that only music making can. And I’m not a musician. Anyone can do it.”

“I find the sounds we make together are really special – both calming and stimulating. I went away from the last session feeling more able to cope with what life is demanding of me right now.”

Playing music together can improve mood, reduce stress and help you feel recharged, ready to step back into your caring role. Improvising music together is a brilliant way to express yourself, whatever emotions you are feeling, and can help people to feel both relaxed and energised.

How to book or find out more? Call Chloe for a quick chat on 07423400655 or email Chloe.buttery@soundwell.org.uk

What to expect? We start with an improvised piece then have a check in to hear how everyone is doing. This is a chance to share how you’re managing with your caring role or just to say how you’re feeling today, if you like. The rest of the group involves creating a few pieces of music together, guided by the music therapists.

What if I can’t attend regularly? There’s no need to commit to coming regularly, we understand the pressures of being an unpaid carer.

But I’m not a musician?! There’s no need for any musical skills or experience as the focus of expression and creativity, rather than playing a certain way. We have lots of accessible instruments which you can easily make a sound with, which you’ll be invited to explore. There is no right or wrong way of playing. And you’re always welcome just to listen to start with!
